Purpose
The Education Committee serves as an advisory committee to Leave No Trace Canada, providing guidance, expertise, and support related to education, training, curriculum development, and public engagement. The committee helps advance Leave No Trace Canada’s mission by promoting high-quality, evidence-informed educational approaches that inspire responsible outdoor recreation and stewardship across Canada.
The committee supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of educational programs, resources, and initiatives that foster awareness, understanding, and application of Leave No Trace principles among diverse audiences.
Objectives
The Education Committee will:
- Provide strategic advice on education priorities, programs, and initiatives.
- Support the development and review of educational resources, training materials, and curriculum.
- Identify emerging trends, research, and best practices in outdoor education, environmental education, stewardship, and behaviour change.
- Support partnerships and collaborations that strengthen outdoor ethics education.
- Advance opportunities to connect Leave No Trace principles with schools, youth programs, outdoor recreation organizations, parks, protected areas, and community groups.
- Provide input on educator training, certification, and professional development opportunities.
- Champion the integration of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and Indigenous perspectives within educational programming and resources.
Scope of Work
The committee may provide advice and recommendations on the development and delivery of education programs, including educator training, youth engagement initiatives, school-based learning opportunities, professional development, and public awareness campaigns.
The committee may also support the creation and review of educational resources such as curriculum materials, lesson plans, the Outdoor Ethics Guide, digital learning tools, interpretation resources, and other knowledge mobilization products.
The committee will help identify and apply research, emerging trends, and best practices related to outdoor ethics, stewardship education, behaviour change, evaluation, and impact measurement. The committee may further advise on partnerships and outreach opportunities that strengthen outdoor ethics education through collaboration with schools, educational institutions, parks and protected areas organizations, outdoor recreation groups, community organizations, non-profits, and Indigenous communities across Canada.
Membership
The Education Committee will consist of up to 12 individuals with experience and expertise in areas such as but not limited to:
- Outdoor education
- Environmental education
- Parks and protected areas
- Recreation and tourism
- Youth development
- Curriculum development
- Interpretation and communications
- Diversity in outdoor recreation
- Indigenous knowledge and perspectives
- Research and evaluation
- Diverse outdoor recreation activities
Committee membership should strive to reflect geographic, cultural, and outdoor recreation and education sector diversity from across Canada. Members are appointed by Leave No Trace Canada and serve as volunteers.
Role and Responsibilities:
Committee Members
Members are expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in meetings.
- Review materials in advance of meetings.
- Provide constructive advice and recommendations.
- Contribute expertise and perspectives from their respective sectors.
- Support committee initiatives and working groups where appropriate.
- Act as ambassadors for Leave No Trace Canada and outdoor ethics education.
Meetings
The Education Committee will meet approximately every other month (minimum 6 times per year), or as required. Additional meetings or working groups may be established to support specific projects or initiatives. Meetings may be held virtually or in person.
Decision-Making
The committee functions primarily in an advisory capacity. Recommendations will generally be developed through discussion and consensus. Where consensus cannot be reached, differing perspectives may be documented and forwarded to Leave No Trace Canada staff and leadership for consideration.
